José Olalla: “To transform the bank, we will grow in spending and investment”

Interview with José Olalla Hevia, published in Computing magazine
(CIO of BBVA)

In this interview (published in issue 658 of Computing magazine) the CIO of BBVA, José Olalla, gives us a preview of the institution’s master plan to combine cost savings with growth.

BBVA is one of the most technologically advanced financial institutions. Proof of this can be seen in the TIER IV certification its Madrid data centre has just obtained, the top level achieved by a Spanish company. In 2010, the group spent €1.8 billion on ICT and this year it will increase this figure in order to complete its transformation and help the organisation to expand abroad, primarily in the United States.

I promise!! I’m not going to discuss numbers

Hello. At last it’s my turn.

Since Pepe set up this blog talking to us about Serrat, I knew that my turn would come. Up to now, you have been reading a first hand description of the activities and functions of the Technology and Operations unit, which will be explained in more detail in future posts by other managers from the area.

So what am I going to talk about? Well, I could try to explain what we do in the Financial Department of BBVA-T&O (what is known internally as “DF T&O”) so I thought it would be a good idea to change the normal way of doing so.

In the WB&AM IT unit (Wholesale Banking and Asset Management is the business area of the bank that operates in the global markets and corporate and investment banking) that has been recently created, our objective is to progress and to try to do things differently, by understanding the characteristics of the business area that we provide technology services to.
